I had to write a 1-2 page speech about a social issue for a class during my freshman year of college. I know it’s not absolutely perfect or totally riveting or anything else of the sort. It was written last minute, and I was rushing through it. If not for the fact that I’m such a procrastinator, I could have done a much better job or perhaps written about something else that’s a bigger issue. However, I AM a procrastinator, so I set out to just write a speech that I’ve given to quite a few people within the 4 months prior to writing this and it turned into a 1.2 page collection of words I’ve used (some of them, at least) to try and convince my family that just because my boyfriend happens to be of another race does not mean that loving him is wrong. So here goes:
Love is one of the purest and most fulfilling emotions a person can experience. It is the realization that the happiness of someone else is essential to one’s own. It is uncontrollable and (as the saying goes) it is blind. What I fail to understand, however, is how something can be blind yet not “color-blind.” Whether we would like to admit it or not, racism has been a part of our society for centuries. Here in the southern United States, it still exists stronger than it does in other parts of the country. However, even here it has diminished compared to its past intensity. It is generally perfectly acceptable for one’s children to be peers of or even close friends with members of other races or ethnicities. However, despite this tolerance and acceptance, many members of the generations prior to the current one still do not approve of interracial relationships. What is so wrong with caring deeply for someone who happens to look a bit different? You would not refuse to allow your children to be with someone who had a different hair or eye color. You would not be opposed to your children marrying someone with freckles or moles, or some other distinguishing marks that are unrelated to race. So why deny your children happiness if it happens to be tied to someone with a darker or lighter skin pigmentation? Why ignore the fact that a man would be your ideal mate for your daughter, that a woman would be all you had ever wished for your son, if not for the color of his or her exterior? Your prejudice will not prevent love from developing between the two. It will not stop that feeling of butterflies in her stomach or his sweaty palms when they lock eyes. It will not—cannot—barricade that which refuses to be contained. You say yourself, “You can’t help who you love,” but then tell your children they’re not allowed to love outside of their own race. Instead of asking us to avert or shut our eyes, open yours. See past the contrast between his skin and hers. See past the years of hate and discrimination. See past the exterior and really see the actual person. Love sees no color. Why should you?
The reason for “The Dandelion Movement” as the title is absolutely beautiful, and so is the overall meaning. :) I love the concept! Thank you for sharing your words with me!!
The Tennessee GOP has continued their assault on gay rights with the “license to bully” bill. If passed, the Tennessee “license to bully” bill would allow students to justify bullying their gay peers by pointing to a political or religious conviction.
This comes on the heels of Republican efforts to pass the infamous “Don’t Say Gay” bill in Tennessee, which would prevent public elementary and middle schools from teaching or distributing material on human sexuality that deals with homosexuality.
Tennessee has seen the heartbreaking story of Jacob Rogers, a young man who took his own life due to being bullied for being gay. We need to provide more support for gay teens, not turn our backs on them.
If one can bully his gay peers based upon political or religious reasons, can he not also bully his peers of other races because it’s justified by his beliefs? Can he not also bully his female peers because his religion states that females are inferior and should bend to the will of men? With a bill like this passed into law, you might as well pass another one that states that rape and even murder are allowed on the basis of religious and/or political justification. This is an outrage, and to create a law that recognizes the free practice of religious intolerance with not merely the potential, but the INTENT to harm others is a mockery of justice.
